Headaches Q & A
What causes headaches?
The doctor can only determine the cause of headaches after a thorough review of the patient’s symptoms and a physical examination. In general, headaches are classified by the source of the problem.
Primary headaches are those that result from overactivity of or issues with pain-sensitive regions of the brain. These types of headaches are not a symptom of another condition. The most common types of primary headaches are migraines, cluster headaches, tension headaches and trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia.
Secondary headaches are those that occur as a symptom of another medical condition that has stimulated the pain-sensitive regions of the brain. Potential culprits of secondary headaches may be a concussion, glaucoma, dehydration, acute sinusitis, brain aneurysm, panic attacks, and stroke, among others.
When should patients see a doctor for headaches?
Patients should make an appointment with Bailey Family Chiropractic Center if they are suffering from a headache that is not relieved after several hours or days. This is especially so if a headache results in loss of consciousness, loss of vision, vomiting and lasts longer than 72 hours without at least four hours being pain-free.
It is a good rule of thumb to schedule an appointment when patients experience a headache that seems to be abnormal or particularly debilitating in nature. The doctors are there to examine the cause of any headaches and help patients find relief.
How can chiropractic care treat headaches?
If patients are suffering from headaches, the doctor will work with them to determine the source of the problem, either a primary or a secondary headache. The chiropractor will perform spinally or other chiropractic adjustments to ease the stress on the nervous system. In addition, the chiropractor may offer nutritional counseling as to how diet and supplements can relieve pain. If a headache arises from tension, the chiropractor may suggest postural changes, exercises and relaxation techniques to relieve tension.
